Baptisms

Baptism (often referred to as ‘Christening’) is the membership badge of the worldwide Christian Church. Through the water of baptism the love of God is poured into our lives to bring forgiveness and new life in Jesus Christ.

At St Wilfrid’s baptisms are usually held once a month during one of the 11.15am services on Sunday mornings. Babies and children are baptised on the understanding that their parents and godparents are speaking on their behalf, promising to help them to grow up as members of the church family. Older children and adults who come to faith in Jesus later in life can be baptised after a period of preparation, and they would usually also be confirmed by the Bishop as a full member of the Church of England.

To be baptised at St Wilfrid’s you need to be living in the parish or be regularly attending the church here.

To enquire about arranging a baptism, please contact the Vicar via the Parish Office in the first instance.

We ask baptism families and their guests not to take photographs or video during the service as it is a distraction from the service for the rest of the congregation, but there will be ample opportunity to take photographs immediately after the service is concluded.

The baptism families and all their guests are warmly invited to stay after the service for refreshments.

Alternatively the church hall can be hired for a private function following the service.
